Lurleen Burns Wallace
In Alabama, George Wallace won the race for governor in 1962. Four years later, he wanted to succeed himself but Alabama law would not then allow a governor to succeed himself. When Wallace didn’t get what he wanted, he ran his wife, Lurleen, and she won. Everybody thought Lurleen would do exactly what George told her to do. When it came to issues of mental health, though, Lurleen had a mind of her own. Moved by what she saw in Bryce and Partlow Hospitals, Alabama’s first female governor set about to help the mentally retarded and mentally ill in Alabama.
